An assassin called the Bride is shot down, with child, by her employer, Bill and other members of their assassin circle, at her wedding. Everyone at the wedding is shot as well, and Bride receives a bullet to the head, that keeps her in a coma for five years. Emerging from the tranquil state, the Bride wakes up pissed off, soon setting out to seek revenge on her former master and his deadly squad of assassins. One by one, she kills the various members of the assassin group. She saves Bill for last.

Landing in jail, she meets Velma Kelly (Zeta-Jones), another chorus girl and murderess, currently enjoying media attention and legal manipulation, care of her attorney, Billy Flynn (Gere), king of the old "Razzle Dazzle." Soon enough, however, Flynn takes Roxie's case as well, and Velma finds herself old news as Roxie is now the most famous murderess in town, on her way to getting out of jail and becoming a star. The two go through a series of attempts at getting what they both want (often conflicting): freedom and fame.
